Regional economic integration and cooperation has become one of the key tools for contributing to the economic dimension of the SEE region’s integration into the EU, for releasing new potential for economic growth and for underpinning political cooperation in the region. Berlin Process has so far produced ambitious agendas aimed at enhancing connectivity among people and businesses in the region and with the EU. Further to that, the governments in the region with the support of the EU institutions have committed themselves to further deepening economic integration by removing obstacles to free movement of goods, services, people and capital.
Chambers of commerce and industry in the region have recognized this process as a significant source of business opportunities for their business communities and decided to set up a regional cooperation platform aimed at supporting businesses in benefiting from these developments in different areas. Chamber Investment Forum (CIF) was created in the framework of the Berlin Process as a joint initiative of the chambers of commerce and industry of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia.
The CIF represents around 350,000 companies, mostly small and medium-sized enterprises in its mission to contribute to 1) removing obstacles to economic regional cooperation, 2) ensuring sustainable economic development in the context of EU accession and 3) improving business and investment climate.
Inaugurated at the Vienna Summit in 2015, CIF has provided platform for giving single voice to the business community in the region and for facilitation of inter-business contacts
CIF Activities are:
CIF is supported by European Commission - DG Near, DG Trade, EBRD, regional organizations such as Regional Cooperation Council, CEFTA, other business associations and organizations such as EUROCHAMBERS, WKO-Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce-DIHK.
In order to enlarge the platform of regional economic cooperation, WB6 CIF has joined efforts with similar initiatives in the region such as the regional business initiative - SUMMIT100 Business Leaders of SEE, SEECEL, etc.
In early 2017, chambers of commerce and industry from the Western Balkans 6 (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia) have decided to establish the WB6 CIF Permanent Secretariat, as a professional CIF entity headquartered in Trieste, Italy. Its inauguration was held on 12 July 2017.
The Multiannual Action Plan for a Regional Economic Area in the Western Balkans 6 (MAP REA) adopted by Prime Ministers of the WB6 at the Summit in Trieste singles out the WB6 CIF and its prominent role in the continuous and interactive dialogue with the private sector, which is one of the key commitments of the region in delivering REA.
The Permanent Secretariat is the first tool CIF has created to further articulate the voice of regional business community.
Work of the WB6 CIF Permanent Secretariat is institutionally supported by the EBRD.
