German Lidl Opens 16 Stores in 12 Cities in Serbia

At 8 a.m. on Oct. 11, 16 German Lidl company stores opened in 12 cities in Serbia.Those cities are Belgrade, Bor, Zrenjanin, Kragujevac, Leskovac, Nis, Novi Sad, Smederevo, Sombor, Subotica, Uzice and Sabac. The stores close at 10 p.m.Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic attended an inaugural ceremony for one of five Lidl stores in Belgrade, and said that Lidl had invested EUR205 million in Serbia and hired 1,553 workers."This is not an ordinary day and these are not your ordinary stores. This is a day where we take a big step toward a better, higher-quality life," Vucic said.Vucic said that the store's shelves would contain products made by domestic producers and that he expected the best products to be sold in stores around the world.German Ambassador Thomas Schieb said that there were 400 German companies in Serbia, which had invested EUR2 billion since 2000.Serbian Minister of Trade Rasim Ljajic said that the arrival of Lidl was important to consumers because it would bring competition and a greater array of different products, and force retail chains to fight for consumers by offering more affordable prices and better service.
